After many wars the inhabitants of the large territory of Montecarlo found refuge on the top of a hill, near the CERRUGLIO where the troups of Ludovico il Bavaro had previously barricated.
In this place thanks also to the help of Carlo of Boemia, a stonewalls village was built. To honour the prince, the small village was called MONSCAROLI.
When the Pisans conquered Lucca in 1342 Montecarlo became an important border county ruled by Pisa , but when Lucca regained in liberty, Montecarlo became the most important town in the districtof VALLERIANA.
In this period the two towers (Torre dell’Apparizione e Torre di Santa Barbara ) were built.
In 1437 Montecarlo was conquered by Francesco Sforza and become part of Florentine state. The Medici reinforced the main tower in order to make the town stronger and more powerful to the attacks of the enemies. But soon all these projects were abandoned as the period of wars calmed down.
